WIRT COUNTY COURTHOUSE

In 1848, the first permanent courthouse was constructed of brick. It was one and one-half stories high and had eight chimneys. A fire destroyed this structure in 1910. Various places were then used for temporary courthouses, including the Elizabeth Elementary School and the Post Office Building.

The present courthouse was completed in 1911. It was built of yellow brick and stands on the same site as the previous one. Its style is classic with Doric columns at the front. The cost to erect the courthouse and jail was $43,150.
