WETZEL COUNTY COURTHOUSE

When Wetzel County was formed from Tyler County in 1846, the name of the county seat was changed from Martinsville to New Martinsville. Meetings were held in Sampson Thistle’s home to organize the county.

Wetzel County ’s first permanent courthouse was completed in 1852. Court was held in that structure until 1900, when the contract was let for the erection of the present building. Handsome cut stone was used in this turn-of-the-century courthouse completed in 1901. The cost - $100,000.
