WAYNE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The first courthouse was constructed of brick in the year 1852. During the Civil War, it was occupied by one side and then the other. This courthouse served until it began to have cracks and show its age.
In July of 1891, a contract was let for the construction of a new building. The new courthouse was occupied in 1893.
In October of 1921, that courthouse was destroyed by fire and a new building was completed in June 1924. Taxpayers paid $109,930 for its construction. In January 1977, in excess of $1 million was spent for renovations and expansion.
