Ritchie County Courthouse

RITCHIE COUNTY COURTHOUSE The first permanent courthouse was a two-story brick building which was used for 30 years until it was torn down in 1874. Another two-story brick structure was erected at that time.

In 1922, a contract was awarded for a new courthouse. It consists of Indiana limestone exterior, a portico and clock tower. The bell placed in the cupola of the first courthouse is still used today. When the building was remodeled, extra space was added and the original building and annex were incorporated into the current structure. Further remodeling was done in 1973, but efforts were made to keep the original décor. The original woodwork was preserved in the circuit courtroom and judge’s chambers.
