Randolph County Courthouse

RANDOLPH COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The present courthouse was begun in 1902. It was completed four years later at a contract price of $110,281. Huge stones were transported on flat cars to the site and hand cut by a stone mason who used a hammer and chisel. A steam ram connected to cables used “ice tongs,” which picked up the huge “dimpled” stones. They were then hoisted into place. A close inspection of the courthouse stones will reveal indentions where the picks held the stones. Stained glass is used in many of the windows including the decorative ones in the lofty tower.

This building is on the National Historic Register.
