Preston County Courthouse

PRESTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE The first permanent courthouse was erected around 1824. It was a stone building near the site of the present courthouse. It served the citizens for thirty-two years.

When the building became too small, construction of a new building began. Before it could be completed, the walls were blown down by a severe storm. The building was finally finished in 1857. In 1870, that structure was allegedly torched by Elihu Gregg to destroy information relative to a pending suit.

A brick courthouse replaced the one destroyed by fire. The present courthouse was erected in 1933 on the same location as the former one.
