PLEASANTS COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The Creel House (now a Masonic Temple ), was used as the site for the first court sessions. A permanent courthouse was erected in 1852. The site was on a square donated by Alexander Creel on the brow of a hill overlooking he town. Bricks were fired for its construction on a nearby farm. A bolt of lightning struck its cupola in 1923, and it was so severely damaged that it was demolished and a new courthouse constructed.

Additional ground was purchased and the new building was constructed in 1925. It was set further back from the brow of the hill allowing a moderate grade for the approach of cars.
