Before the August 8, 2006 fire. Morgan County Courthouse

MORGAN COUNTY COURTHOUSE

In 1820, a large stone residence, costing $3,500, was remodeled for the first courthouse. After it burned in 1844, a second one was erected. This building was one block east facing Fairfax Street . It was razed in 1907.
Court sessions were then held in the theater. Offices were then opened in a small structure on the grounds until the new courthouse could be completed.
That courthouse was dedicated in 1908 , at a cost of $17,908. In a breakdown of that figure, some of the items listed were: a town clock $515, electric light fixtures $177, concreting coal bin $100 and furniture $1,026. An annex was later constructed.
On August 8, 2006 that courthouse also burned down due to an electrical fire. Morgan County is currently in the process of having a new courthouse built. Officials hope and anticipate that a new courthouse will be completed by 2010. Morgan County is currently conducting courthouse business out of temporary facilities.
On December 1, 2006 the Courthouse Facilities Improvement Authority awarded Morgan County a $500,000 grant to assist in the rebuilding process.
