Monroe County Courthouse

MONROE COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The first courthouse was a two-story log structure and was built in 1802. Its exterior surface was covered with lap shingles and it was painted with lime. County officials opted to replace this rudimentary courthouse in 1820 because it constantly needed repairs.
The second courthouse was of brick composition with tall white colonial columns in front. It had a cupola topped with a spire and two large chimneys.
The third and present courthouse replaced it in 1881. Locally manufactured bricks were used in its construction. All three buildings have been erected on the same site.
