Mingo County Courthouse

MINGO COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Mingo County was formed in 1895 and is the state’s youngest county. Mingo County ’s first courthouse was a two story and one-half brick and stone building. It was built around 1904.

The present courthouse, a modern three-story facility with black granite base and sandstone top, was finished around 1966. When the Tug Fork River flooded in 1977, all the courthouse records were ruined by the muddy water. A unique structure on the grounds of the courthouse is called the “Coal House,” because it is constructed of 65 tons of coal. Built in 1933, it houses the Chamber of Commerce and draws attention to the multi-million dollar seams of coal in the vicinity.
