MINERAL COUNTY COURTHOUSE

J. B. Walton was awarded the contract to erect the first courthouse in Mineral County around 1868 at New Creek (now Keyser). His bid was $11,400. Early court records show additional expenditures after the completion of the building. These included digging and walling a water well, $72; placing a picket fence around the courthouse property, $25; and constructing outhouses, $96.

This three-story brick and stone building, the original courthouse, is being used today. It has a 55-foot tower at the main entrance. Citizens enjoy sitting on wood benches in the shaded area of the courthouse lawn.
