Mercer County Courthouse

MERCER COUNTY COURTHOUSE

The first courthouse was erected in 1839. It was razed the following year and rebuilt. Confederate forces burned the second courthouse in 1862. A battle arose between the towns of Bluefield and Princeton for the location of the county seat. Princeton won by 400 votes in the run-off.

A new courthouse was erected in Princeton in 1875. This building was also burned. One year later a brick courthouse replaced that building. This structure was torn down and replaced by the present courthouse in 1931. This impressive sandstone building can be entered from all four sides through bronze doors.
