MARSHALL COUNTY COURTHOUSE

Elizabethtown and Moundsville were independent towns for over thirty years before they were consolidated. County commissioners were directed to have a courthouse and jail erected in Elizabethtown in 1836. This structure, two stories high, provided two rooms on the first floor for cells. It was used for thirty-nine years, when the county replaced it with a new courthouse.

The first session of court was held in the new courthouse on December 27, 1876 . This red brick courthouse has spacious grounds and a plaza honoring all veterans. A new addition was completed in 1974.
