LEWIS COUNTY COURTHOUSE
The first courthouse was a brick structure erected in 1820-21. It was stipulated that the first story be 14’ high and second story 12’ high. Squire Oliver, who saw it as it was in 1844, said that it was out of proportion and that when wind blew, the building swayed. It was never completed, but continued to be the courthouse until 1857, when another courthouse was built.
The second courthouse was a two-story frame, colonial in design. In 1886, a fire originating in the cupola destroyed it. All valuable papers and records were saved.
The present courthouse, constructed of grey stone and brick, was erected in 1887.
