Gilmer County Courthouse

GILMER COUNTY COURTHOUSE

A jail for the county was erected in 1846 and the first courthouse was completed four years later. This courthouse was used until it was sold at public auction in 1872, when Stephen Ruddell purchased it for twenty-five dollars.

A second courthouse was secured about 1874. The sheriff’s quarters were located on the first floor. A large courtroom and offices of the county and circuit clerks were placed on the second floor.

The third and present courthouse was finished in 1923 at a cost of $99,000. Because of the added volume of business since 1923, this structure has been enlarged.
