Fayette County Courthouse

FAYETTE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
The county’s first courthouse was demolished during the Civil War.
After West Virginia became a state in 1863, a pro-Union county court was organized and a new courthouse was constructed. In 1887, a bid was accepted to erect the third courthouse. It served the citizens for only six years. In 1893, it burned to the ground.
Contractors erected the fourth and present courthouse in 1895. It was designed by the Wheeling architectural firm of Franzheim and Giesey and is in the Romanesque Revival style.
The porches at the front and southeast corners feature heavy stone columns with stout capitals that support the balcony’s balustrade. It is on the National Historical Register.
