Clay County Courthouse

CLAY COUNTY COURTHOUSE
The first county courthouse was a two-story log structure which was commissioned by the county court in 1858. It was not completed until after the Civil War.
The second building, constructed in 1903, overlooked the main street. The site is identical to the one used for the first clerk’s office in the middle 1800s.
The third and present red brick courthouse represents contemporary styling and is much larger than the original. It was dedicated on September 23, 1978. More than $1.3 million in federal and state money was used which made its construction possible without any increase in local taxes. It is located directly across the street from the second courthouse.
