BROOKE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
During the early years of the county, James McGindon’s home was used for court. The first courthouse was built in 1799. The carpentry was done by Samuel Herdman, who lived to see the building torn down in 1849, and the present brick courthouse erected on the same site.
County officials saved the original bell from the first courthouse so that it could be incorporated in the present one. Its inscription was “G. Hedderly, Philadelphia , 1807, Fecit.”
There have been two additions made to the building to serve the needs of its citizens.
