BRAXTON COUNTY COURTHOUSE

It is believed that the first circuit court convened at the home of John D. Sutton in 1836 and the town bears his name. During the Civil War, Confederate soldiers burned the town including the courthouse and all but four houses.
The present courthouse is a two-story Romanesque structure originally desigend by Felix J. Baxter, a local resident. It was not until 1882 that the present courthouse was finished. Bricks used in its construction were made from clay found nearby. Additions were made to the structure in 1938.
A miniature cut-stone jail is situated on the lawn adjacent to the courthouse.
