Boone County Courthouse

BOONE COUNTY COURTHOUSE
The county seat was originally known as Ballardsville. Ballardsville was torched by Union soldiers during the Civil War but citizens rebuilt it near the old site.
In 1865, a courthouse was constructed from brick and was condemned in 1913. The foundation of the present courthouse was begun a year later.
The present courthouse was completed in 1921. The edifice is on the National Register of Historic Places. The 3-story, gray limestone structure, of Neoclassical design, features Beaux-Arts Classical influences, most notably in the open domed belvedere above the central mass. The building is the significant work of architect H. Rus Warne, a pioneer leader and organizer among early West Virginia architects.
