Barbour County Courthouse

BARBOUR COUNTY COURTHOUSE
William K. Hall built the first courthouse in 1843-44 and the first court was held there in 1845.  Union troops occupied it during the Civil War and from its cupola floated the first battle flag of that war.  In February 1903, the present courthouse replaced it.
The present courthouse was designed by architect J. Charles Fulton who was from western Pennsylvania and north central West Virginia. Built between 1903-1905, the Romanesque Revival building is the focal point of Philippi.  It is constructed of hand-cut Hummelstown stone and the upper portions of the windows are adorned with stained glass.
Citizens enjoy sunning themselves and exchanging a story or two in the plaza area.
