General Exterior

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office was constructed in 1974. It is not on the National Historic Register. The building is one and one half story and is approximately 7500 square feet.  The foundation is concrete and there appeared to be some minor settlement.

Exterior Walls

The exterior walls are brick and block. The paint is peeling in some areas.  There are several stair step and vertical cracks.

Paint the exterior block walls.

Roof

The roof is moderately pitched with asphalt shingles. The roof has been replaced and appears to be in good condition.

 

 

Windows and Doors

Most of the windows are aluminum framed, single –paned and are original to the building. The windows on the front of the building were replaced in 1992. The windows are in good condition. The doors are aluminum with glass or steel and operate properly and are in good condition. P23 P24

 

 

Fire Safety

There is neither a fire alarm system nor a sprinkler system. There are no emergency lights with power back up. There are illuminated exit signs. The stairs are not enclosed by fire rated doors and walls. The stairs are free from obstructions. There is no storage under the stairs. The exit doors swing in the direction of the exit. The doors are equipped with panic hardware.

Install a fire alarm system.

Enclose the stairway with a fire rated door and wall.

ADA Compliance

There is ADA parking for the building and is well marked with paint and signs. There is not a five-foot aisle beside the ADA parking stalls. There is no sign to indicate illegal parking fine of $100. There is a ramp to the entrance. There is no railing on the ramp. There is a lack of raised letter ADA signage in the corridors and in the doors. The fire alarm system does not have strobe lights. The doors are not equipped with lever hardware. There are no public restrooms in this facility. P14 P26

Provide a five-foot aisle adjacent to the ADA parking stall.

 

Install $100 fine sign.

 

Install railing on each side of the ramp.

 

Install ADA signs on the doors and in the corridors.

 

Install strobe lights on the fire alarm.

 

Replace all doorknobs with lever hardware.

 

Install one men’s ADA restroom. (can be employee only)

Structure

 

There are several minor cracks in the brick and block as noted above in “Exterior Walls” above.

We recommend consulting a structural engineer to determine the extent of the settlement.

Security

There is an alarm system in the building. There is no metal detector. There is no closed circuit TV system in the building.

 

 

Electrical

The service to the building is overhead. There is a 200 amp Square D panel, a 225 amp Square D panel and a 60-amp GE panel and all are in excellent condition. The lighting in the building is both fluorescent and incandescent and is in excellent condition.

 

 

Mechanical

The water is heated by two CraftMasters that are in excellent condition. P7 The HVAC system consists of a Dual AC and gas fired furnace combination made by Payne, Carrier and Lennox. There is also a Carrier condensing unit. All are in excellent condition. P5 P6 P8 P9

 

 

Work Safety

No work safety issues were noted during the inspection.

 

 

 

Space is limited for storage in the courthouse complex. Documents are being stored off site and that storage is full. Judges need more filing space. More room is needed for the handling of ballots for elections.

A 30,000 square foot annex is proposed in the main courthouse report to accommodate the growing complex.
