Wood County Executive Summary

Front of Courthouse                                 Front of Sheriff’s Office

Front of Magistrate Building                              Front of Judicial Annex

The Wood County courthouse was built in 1899 and was renovated around 1983. The building is on the National Historic register, and it is approximately 40,000 square feet.  The general exterior of the building is in good condition, but the steps to the entrance are cracking.  We recommend repairing the steps.

This building contains a fire alarm system, a sprinkler system, exit signs and emergency lights.  The exit doors swing in the direction of the exit, but there is no panic hardware on the exit doors.  We recommend installing panic hardware on all the exit doors.

To bring this building up to ADA compatibility requirements, we recommend providing a 5-foot aisle for the ADA parking spaces, and installing $100 fine signs for illegally parking in the handicap parking space.  We also recommend replacing all door knobs with lever hardware.  In addition, raised letter ADA signs should be installed in the corridors and on the doors, and strobe lights and horns on the fire alarms in all of the restrooms.

To improve security to this building, we recommend installing a security system and a closed circuit television system.

The electrical system is in good condition.  The mechanical system contains some components that are starting to get old.  We recommend replacing various mechanical units as necessary.

There is a need for more office and storage space.  We recommend building a 30,000 square foot annex.

The Wood County Sheriff’s Office building was built in 1974, and it is approximately 7,500 square feet.  The building is in good condition, but the exterior blocks should be painted.  There is minor cracking on the exterior of the building.  We recommend consulting a structural engineer to determine the extent of the settlement.  This building contains no fire safety equipment.  We recommend installing a fire alarm system, emergency lights, and enclosing the stairway with a fire rated door and wall.  To bring this building up to ADA compatibility requirements, we recommend providing a five-foot aisle adjacent to the ADA parking stall, and installing a $100 fine sign for illegal parking in the handicap parking space.  We also recommend installing railing on each side of the ramp.  In addition, there should be ADA signs installed on the doors and in the corridors, strobe lights on the fire alarm.  We also recommend replacing all door knobs with lever hardware and installing one men’s ADA restroom (can be employee only), and one women’s ADA restroom (can be employee only).

The Magistrate building was built in the 1960’s, and it is approximately 15,000 square feet.  The building is in good condition.  To bring this building up to ADA compatibility requirements, we recommend installing an automatic door opener, raised letter ADA signs throughout the corridors and on the doors, and lever hardware on all of the doors.  To improve security to this building, we recommend installing ballistic material on all judge’s bench, and duress buttons on the all judge’s bench and desk.

The Judicial Annex was built in 1982, and it is approximately 40,000 square feet.  The building is in good condition.  The fire safety system is in good condition, but we recommend installing panic hardware on all the exit doors.  To bring this building up to ADA compatibility requirements, we recommend providing a 5’ x 16’ minimum aisle adjacent to ADA parking stalls.  In addition, there should be raised letter ADA signs installed throughout the corridors and on the doors, lever hardware on all of the doors, and a witness stand and judge’s bench lift.  To improve security to this building, we recommend installing an X-ray machine, and a closed circuit television system including cameras and console.

The holding facility building was built in 1974 and it is approximately 22,000 square feet.  This building is in good condition.  We recommend remodeling approximately half of the existing holding facility for storage and offices.

Total cost of this project: $8,043,720
