General Exterior

The jail, which is on the historic register, was built in 1902, (P1, P2, P3, P4).  The jail is 2 stories with a basement.  It has a stone foundation with no evidence of settlement.  The sheriff’s office was living quarters and is in excellent condition.

 

 

 

Exterior Walls

The stone walls appear to be in good condition except for some minor water damage, moss and mold; mortar is worn away and crumbling, (P5, P6).

 

Clean and repoint the stone.

Roof

The flat rubber membrane roof was repaired 3 years ago and has no leaks, (P7, P8).

 

 

 

Windows and Doors

The wooden windows are single pane, (P9).  There is some rot, peeling paint and missing caulk.  The windows in basement are broken, (P10). 

 

The doors are wooden and appear adequate.

 

Replace the windows in the jail with historic profiles.

Fire Safety

There is a fire alarm, (P11).  There are strobes, exit lights, or sprinklers.  The stairs are not enclosed.  The exit doors swing outward and have panic hardware.  There are not two means of egress out of each floor

Install a sprinkler system for the building with strobes.

 

Install an enclosed stair tower for a second means of egress.

 

Install exit lights (included in renovation costs).

Structure

 

Floors are made of wood and do not look overloaded.  There is some repair needed for water-damaged areas, which will occur during the renovation.

 

 

 

ADA Compliance

The jail shares accessible parking with the courthouse.  There jail is not accessible and there are no accessible bathrooms. 

Install a ramp for accessibility.

 

Upgrade the building during renovation to meet ADA guidelines.

There are closed circuit cameras in the building.  There is no other system security in the building.
