Executive Summary
Raleigh County

Front of Courthouse Front of Prosecuting Attorney’s Office

Front of Commissioner’s Building
The Raleigh County Courthouse was built in 1936 and it is approximately 42,000 square feet. The building has four stories and a basement. The exterior walls are in good condition except for some moss and mold growing on them. We recommend that the exterior walls be cleaned and any cracks in the mortar need repaired.
The doors of the building are in good condition. The windows are original to the building and there are signs of rust and corrosion. We recommend that the windows be replaced with period appropriate windows and sashes.
The fire safety equipment consists of a fire alarm system, emergency and exit lights, and panic hardware on all the exit doors. We recommend that a new fire alarm system with smoke, heat detectors, horns, and strobes be installed, and the building have a sprinkler system installed.
To improve security to this building, we recommend equipping the facility with entry-level screening using a walk-through metal detector and an X-ray machine, a security console and closed circuit television system. We also recommend that panic alarms and duress alarms be installed. In addition, the judge’s benches and clerk’s desk should have ballistic protection on all sides with public exposure.
To bring
this building up to meet
The electrical system in the building is the original. We recommend that the system be upgraded. The HVAC system was upgraded in 1997, but there still are air conditioning units in the windows. The HVAC system should be upgraded so that all the window unit air conditioners can be eliminated.
The Raleigh
County Prosecuting Attorney’s building is approximately 7,290 square feet. The exterior walls are made of stone. The stone should be cleaned and any cracks in
the exterior walls should be repaired. A
security system and duress alarms should be installed in the building. The mechanical systems of the building are
outdated and a new central HVAC system should be installed to provide the
building with heating and air conditioning.
To bring this building up to
The
Commissioner’s Building is approximately 5,000 square feet and the building has
two stories and a basement. The exterior
walls are made of brick and these walls have some cracks and water damage on
them. An engineering study should be
preformed on the cracks to the exterior walls of the building, and the building
should be repainted. The building’s fire
safety system needs upgraded by installing strobes light and installing fire
rated doors to enclose the stairways. We
also recommend that a security system be installed in the building. To bring this building up to
The Raleigh
County Judicial Annex building is approximately 17,170 square feet. The exterior of the building has rust on it
from leaking downspouts and the perimeter of the building is uneven. The downspouts be replaced and exterior walls
should be cleaned and any mortar cracks or damaged bricks should be
repaired. This building’s roof has
leakage problems, therefore, we recommend replacement of the roof. The windows and doors are original to the
building and they are in poor condition.
Windows need to be replaced and the doors replaced with steel doors and
hardware. This building does have a fire
alarm system, but it should also have smoke detectors, heat detectors, horns,
strobes, and fire rated doors on the stairwells. To improve security in the building, the
building needs to be have an entry-level screening with an X-ray machine, a
security console system, panic alarms and duress alarms. In addition, the judge’s desks should have
ballistic protection on all sides with public exposure. To bring this building up the meeting
