General Exterior	Preston County Jail is a stone building housing the jail and the sheriff’s office (P6, P8, P10).
Exterior Walls	The exterior of the jail appears to be in good condition. The exterior of the building is stone, and block with an enclosed front porch made of wood. There was some leakage in the basement under the porch.	Repair the basement leaks	$ 5,000
Roof	We were unable to look at the roof because of the construction. There did not appear to be any leaks in the building caused by the roof. The roof is asphalt shingles in relatively good shape.
Windows and Doors	Windows have steel sashes. They are in poor condition and need replacing if the building is used for something other than a jail.	When the jail becomes available for use by the county, the windows should be replaced with double-pane insulated glass.	$42,400
Fire Safety	The jail has an automatic fire alarm system with smoke detectors but lacks strobe lights. The building is not sprinkled. There is one stairway and one fire escape. An enclosed stair tower that exits directly to the outside should replace the fire escape.	Install fire stair and tower and strobe lights	$41,600
ADA Compliance	The accessible parking is in the back next to the courthouse.
Structure	There were no structural problems mentioned.
Security	The county has recently upgraded the security in the jail.
Electrical	The electrical system was not available for viewing at the time of the inspection.
Mechanical	The mechanical system that consists of a gas fired boiler and a small chiller is relatively new and in good working order.
Work Safety
Space requirements	The jail, once it is unoccupied, could be turned into storage and offices.	Renovate the interior of the jail into storage and offices	$1,200,000
