General Exterior

The Pendleton County Jail is in very poor condition. It is a two-story brick structure with a one story brick addition on the rear.  It has a large crack in the exterior brick wall that runs between the two story side and the one story side.  The building is in poor repair having a leaking roof and old windows

The Jail building is abandoned and is in very poor condition.  We recommend razing the building.

Exterior Walls

The exterior of the courthouse is brick with major cracking and the mortar is in need of re-pointing.

Roof

The metal roof is leaking and should be replaced, if the building is to be reused.

Windows and Doors

The windows are wood with rotten sills and should be replaced with historic sashes.

Fire Safety

The building does not have sprinklers, fire alarms, exit signs, or emergency lights.

Structure

There is significant cracking in the exterior all of the structure.

Security

Except for door locks there is no security in this building.

Electrical

The electrical system is antiquated and should be replaced.

Mechanical

The existing heating system is a boiler with supply pipes cast into the floor.  The pipes are apparently leaking steam and the floor becomes unbearably hot.

Work Safety

The building is abandoned and poses a hazard to the courthouse next door.

Space requirements

The county has a study by Sean G. Simon, AIA Architect, dated October 15, 2002, recommending the Jail be razed.  He proposed that it would cost $918,000 to repair the jail building and still it would not serve the county’s needs.

Raze the existing Jail (see notes on the Courthouse Report)
