General Exterior

The jail, built in 1938, has 3780 square feet, (front, P1; left, P2 ).  The building has 3 stories with a basement.  The concrete foundation has no settlement.  There is no public access to building.

 

We recommend that the jail be renovated for storage once the prisoners are relocated to the regional jail.

 

Exterior Walls

The exterior walls are brick.  They are in good condition but need to be cleaned.

 

Clean the outside of the building.

Roof

The roof is pitched with a rubber membrane (P3), which has begun to bubble.  There is some damage to the flashing.

 

Repair jail roof and flashing.

Windows and Doors

The steel windows are original with single panes.  They are corroded and missing caulking.  The doors are wood.  They are in good condition except for peeling paint

 

Replace original windows.

 

Repaint front door.

Fire Safety

The building has no fire alarm, strobes, exit lights, sprinklers or emergency lights.  The stairs are not enclosed and are blocked with major storage underneath.  The staircases should be cleared to allow access during a fire and the stored material under the stairs should be removed.  The doors do not have panic hardware.

 

Install new fire alarm system.

 

Enclose stairs with firewall and fire door.

Structure

 

The interior floors are in good condition.  They do not appear to be overloaded.  There is some minor cracking of the plaster walls.

 

Repair cracks in walls.

Security

There are no metal detectors or closed circuit TV.  The building is being used for storage so only locks are needed.  If the building is renovated for another use, additional security may be needed.

 

 

 

ADA Compliance

The jail shares accessible parking with the courthouse.  There is currently no public access to this building and no ADA bathroom.

 

The building should be made ADA compliant during renovation.

 

Electrical

The electrical system is inadequate.

Replace existing electrical service and rewire building per NEC code during renovation.

Mechanical

The jail is serviced by a Weil-McLain gas fire boiler, model.

 

Renovate building when regional jail is completed.  Install new HVAC system at time of renovation.

The old cells are being used as storage. (P4, P5).
