General Exterior

The original date for the Marion County Jail construction was 1910.  The Jail’s approximate size is 16,560 with three stories plus a basement, (P1, P2).  The general exterior and stone foundation are in good condition.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Exterior Walls

 The exterior walls are stone and brick.  The walls are in good condition with some minor cracks, (P3).  There is mold/moss and stains on the building, (P5).

 

Clean the stone to remove the stains and mold/moss and patch cracks.

Roof

The roof is a pitched clay tile roof in good condition, (P8).  There is also a flat rubber membrane area around the perimeter which appears to be leaking, (P9) 

 

Replace the rubber membrane perimeter around tile roof.

Windows and Doors

 The windows are a combination of original single pane wood frame and double pane aluminum windows, (P10, P11).  Some of the wood windows are rotted and have peeling paint as well as painted over glass.

 

The doors are aluminum/glass.  They are in good condition.  The front door is the only public access to the building, (P12).  There is no panic hardware on the door.

 

Repair rotted areas of windows, scrape and paint; remove grills and bars for renovation.

 

Install panic hardware on the exit doors.

There is no accessible parking at the jail.

 

The building is not accessible.

Fire Safety

There is a fire alarm system, exit lights and emergency lights.  There is no sprinkler system.  There is storage under the stairs, which should be cleared, (P15). 

Install a sprinkler system if this building is to be used for storage.

Structure

 

The structure of the building is in good condition.  There are some interior cracks in the brick, (P18). 

 

Perform an engineering study to determine the cause of the interior cracks.

There is a closed circuit TV system.

 

If this building is to be used for storage, no other security is needed.

 

Electrical

The electrical system is in good condition except for one panel, which has exposed wires, (P16).  The lighting in the building is fluorescent and incandescent.  The lighting is adequate. 

 

Correct electrical panel to meet NEC guidelines.

Mechanical

There is a Bryan gas-fire boiler to provide heat (P17).  It is in good condition.  There is no air conditioning in the jail cells.  There are two window units for the offices in good condition.

 

Air conditioning should be installed for the entire building if converted for storage, covered under renovation.

 

Work Safety

There were no work safety issues noted.

 

 

 

Space requirements

There is a need for proper storage space for the courthouse complex.

Renovate the jail to storage space.
