General Exterior

The county jail building was constructed in 1958 and is approximately 2700 square feet (P4, P5, P6). The building has a concrete foundation.

 

 

Exterior Walls

The exterior brick walls are in good condition except for a few cracks (P1, P2, P3). There is some efflorescence on the brick.

Roof

The roof is a moderately pitched with asphalt shingles and was replaced in 2001 and in good condition (P22, P23).

 

 

Windows and Doors

The windows in the building are aluminum framed, double-glazed and in good condition.

 

The doors are made of wood and are also in good condition. There are no signs of wear or rot.

 

 

Fire Safety

The building has a fire alarm system but this fire alarm panel also needs serviced according to the report performed by Schirmer Engineering Corporation.

The building has emergency lights with power back up. There is no sprinkler system in the building. There are no exit lights.

Service the fire panel.

 

Install illuminated exit signs.

ADA Compliance

There is ADA parking for the building. There is a ramp to the entrance with railing on one side (P5). There are no ADA bathrooms in the building. The doors are not equipped with lever hardware. There are no raised letter signs in the corridors.

Install railing on the other side of the ramp.

 

Install one ADA restroom.

 

Equip all doors with lever hardware.

 

Install ADA signs on the doors and in the corridors.

Structure

 

There are several cracks in the brick exterior as mentioned above.

These cracks appear to be minor. We recommend monitoring them and consulting a structural engineer if they get worse.

 

Security

There is no form of security in the building.

Install a security system.

The building is equipped with a new emergency generator. (P12) The electrical equipment in the building is old but appears to be in good condition. (P13)

 

 

Mechanical

The building uses window AC units for cooling. (P7) The boiler is located in the basement. P18 The system is very old. 

We recommend installing a new HVAC system.

There were no issues noted during the inspection.

 

 

Space requirements

This is a very small building and space is limited.

A 10,000 square foot annex building for the complex is proposed on the main report. The annex would be very beneficial to this building.
