General Exterior

The jail was built in 1921 and has 13,308 square feet.  It has a stone foundation with no evidence of settlement, (P1, P2, P3, P4).  There are some stair step cracks in retaining wall in front of the jail (P5). 

 

Repair the retaining wall and steps.

Exterior Walls

The stone and brick exterior is in good shape other than moss and crumbling and missing mortar in some places.

Roof

The building has a pitched roof with asphalt shingles.  It appears to be in satisfactory condition.

 

 

 

Windows and Doors

There are all new vinyl windows that are double-glazed and in good condition.  The doors are aluminum and glass, also in good condition. 

 

 

 

Fire Safety

The building does not have a fire alarm or sprinkler system.

 

Install a fire alarm system with strobe lights to the building.

 

Install a sprinkler system.

Structure

 

We were unable to gain access to the jail. 

 

 

ADA Compliance

The handicapped parking space is adequate.  The ramp into the building is steep and the handrails are not ADA compliant, they should have two rails and extend past the ramp, (P7).

Fix the access ramp handrails to meet ADA requirements and

 

Reduce the slope of the ramp.

Security

The only security in the building is the law enforcement officers who are present 24 hours per day.

 

Install a security system in the building appropriate to the use of the building, which includes a courtroom.

There were no work safety concerns noted.

 

 

 

Space requirement

More storage and office spaces are needed.  There are 7,800 square feet of unused space in the jail not accounted for in the 1999 report.  This space could be renovated for use as storage and offices since the regional jail now houses prisoners.

Renovate the remaining part of the annex for storage and office space.
